Description

In 1940, an 18-year-old student learned to fly an airplane. This experience fired his ambition to succeed. Flying as a career became an obsession, but many obstacles stood in his way. This memoir describes the story of the man who faced each obstacle with courage and determination. Ultimately, these qualities, plus a measure of good luck, led him to find his place in the new business of aviation that grew swiftly after WW II. Armed with a sense of humor and the love of a supportive wife, John's adventures introduced them to many places in the world. Come aboard for this flight and read an All-American story. - - - - - - - - "Some of the experiences in this book were edited from letters that John "Dobbie" Dobson wrote to me during World War II. After the war ended, he continued flying for 36 years as a commercial pilot. This was in the era that he and aviation enthusiasts pioneered the expansion of the Flying Tiger Line and the air freight industry. Many of the stories generated from his experiences during that time were related to me and his flying buddies by Dobbie himself. I have tried to recall his voice in writing them, for he was a good storyteller. In sharing these stories with you, it is my hope that they will help you appreciate his particular zest for flying and for the life he led. As you read them, you may also discover that they shine a light on an interesting period in our American history. "I am forever grateful that I was able to go along with John on this adventure during the 72 years we were together. It was a great ride." Janet Dobson
