Description

Since the late eighteenth century, academic engagement with political, economic, social, cultural and spatial changes in our cities has been dominated by theoretical frameworks crafted with reference to just a small number of cities. This book offers an important antidote to the continuing focus of urban studies on cities in 'the Global North'. Urban Theory Beyond the West contains twenty chapters from leading scholars, raising important theoretical issues about cities throughout the world. Past and current conceptual developments are reviewed and organized into four parts: 'De-centring the City' offers critical perspectives on re-imagining urban theoretical debates through consideration of the diversity and heterogeneity of city life; 'Order/Disorder' focuses on the political, physical and everyday ways in which cities are regulated and used in ways that confound this ordering; 'Mobilities' explores the movements of people, ideas and policy in cities and between them and 'Imaginaries' investigates how urbanity is differently perceived and experienced. There are three kinds of chapters published in this volume: theories generated about urbanity 'beyond the West'; critiques, reworking or refining of 'Western' urban theory based upon conceptual reflection about cities from around the world and hybrid approaches that develop both of these perspectives. Urban Theory Beyond the West offers a critical and accessible review of theoretical developments, providing an original and groundbreaking contribution to urban theory. It is essential reading for students and practitioners interested in urban studies, development studies and geography.

Description

After the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, the rest of the United States was up for grabs, and the race was on. The prize: a better, shorter, less snowy route through the American Southwest, linking Los Angeles to Chicago. In IRON HORSES, Borneman recounts the rivalries, contested routes, political posturing and business dealings that unfolded as an increasing number of lines pushed their way across the country.Borneman brings to life the legendary robber barons behing it all and also captures the herculean efforts required to construct these roads - the laborers who did the back-breaking work, the brakemen who ran atop moving cars, the tracklayers crushed and killed by runaway trains. From backroom deals in Washington, DC, to armed robberies of trains in the wild deserts, from cattle cars to streamliners to Super Chiefs, all the great incidents and innovations of a mighty American era are made vivid in IRON HORSES.

Description

Signals and Systems is a textbook designed for undergraduate students of engineering for a course by the same title. This textbook uses a student-friendly approach to explain the fundamental concepts of the subject. It includes numerous solved examples with step-by-step solutions for easier understanding of the theoretical concepts. Beginning with classifying signals, the book moves on to other topics such as convolution and correlation of signals, CTFS, DTFS, CTFT, Sampling, Laplace Transform, and z-Transform. One complete chapter is devoted to MATLAB programs and another chapter is entirely devoted to Hilbert Transform. The subject matter is presented by illustrating the concepts first through abstract mathematical reasoning and then through solved examples. Solving the number of multiple choice questions and numerical exercises at the end of the chapters will help students to apply the concepts learnt in the chapters.

Description

This book discusses abortion in a non-Western, non-Christian context - in Thailand, where over 300,000 illegal abortions are performed each year by a variety of methods. The book, based on extensive original research in the field, examines a wide range of issues, including stories of the real-life dilemmas facing women, popular representations of abortion in the media, the history of the debate in Thailand and its links to politics. Overall, the work highlights the voices of women and their subjective experiences and perceptions of abortion, and places these 'women's stories' in an analysis of broader socio-political gender and power relations that structure sexuality and women's reproductive health decisions.

Description

"Extreme unction" and "last rites" are no longer a part of the Church's ministry to the sick and dying, according to Father Charles Gusmer. Today, communal celebration frames sacramental experience. In the rites for the sick and dying, this experience is the paschal mystery-working in the life of the seriously ill Christian in the community. Priests, deacons, and students of liturgy will find this work a sourcebook for understanding the development of the rites and a guide in the ritual praxis. Suggestions for ministerial implementation are made in the context of information now available from liturgical scholarship and modern scientific research on sickness and death.

Within a year, the familiar boundaries of Spalding Gray's existence have been altered by betrayal, love, lust and loss. He suddenly marries his longtime companion, and divorces her just as quickly; he moves in with his girlfriend, Kathie, who bears him a son; and he learns, against all odds, to ski. But not even his mastery of the much-feared right turn can prepare him for the exhilarating experience of fatherhood. A brilliant improvisation with as many twists and turns as a double-diamond course, It's a Slippery Slope explores how one man survives a mid-life crisis by finding his balance on skis.

Description

This well regarded series for students taking the commercial and airline transport pilot licences has been substantially revised to bring it into line with the new European Joint Aviation Requirements (JARs) for flight crew licensing. Each volume deals with the material required by one of the new JAR papers. This volume deals with those subjects covered in the 022 section of the aircraft general knowledge part of the syllabus. It continues to cover air data and gyroscopic flight instruments, compasses and inertial navigation systems. Electronic instrumentation, automatic flight control and in-flight protection systems have been included and updated, together with thrust control and powerplant and system monitoring instruments. Basic principles are covered as before, but emphasis on obsolete equipment and calculations has been reduced or removed as appropriate, permitting increased coverage of modern systems. The opportunity has been taken to simplify the presentation of information so as to aid study and revision work. Many test questions and answers have been included, based upon the JAR syllabus and style.
