Description

Dr. Kronmiller has greatly enjoyed tutoring high school students in preparation for the college entrance exams. It has brought him great joy to see academically motivated students discover the beauty of English, Mathematics and Science. This work is the culmination of fifteen years of teaching and preparing students for the college entrance exams and building strong skill sets in college bound students. The Math Section is designed to prepare the student for both the ACT Math Exam and the SAT Subject Exam Math Level II. This is not a quick and dirty guide to the ACT. A student who finishes this study guide will be well prepared for the ACT, SAT Subject Exam Math Level II and freshman college level work. After a brief introduction to controlling timing and completing each section within the time specified; Dr. Kronmiller spends the rest of the time building the student's basic academic skill set. A skill set is not just an assemblage of facts but the knowledge of how these facts were discovered and how they are used to solve problems of varying complexity. He scatters a few historical, sometimes amusing antidotes to illustrate everything from English Grammar to the basic Mathematics that lead to differential calculus. While some of this is beyond the scope of the ACT, he believes that the development from basic algebra provides excellent preparation. If you can conquer this book, you will not only score a great ACT score but will provide yourself an excellent review and preparation college courses. The approach provides an intuitive method that allows the student to be confident of completing each timed section with time remaining for review. Removing the stress of the timed aspect of the exam the student then can focus on achieving the highest score based on their current skill set. As mentioned above, the second part of the approach provides a strengthening of the student's skill set. Recently one of his student's parents wrote, ?What is quite remarkable about Dr. David Kronmiller was his ability to establish a trusting and friendly rapport with our son as he explained complicated concepts in concrete terms. He used his thorough knowledge in multiple academic areas along with his creativity to engage Daniel in discussions on a variety of related topics. As a result, Daniel's ability to grasp and master the concepts of an academic topic markedly improved as well as his insight into understanding the related effects and consequences of that particular concept in our world today. We highly recommend Dr. David Kronmiller as an effective and inspirational tutor in several areas of academics including all levels of science, math, world history, English language and literature." He uses this same approach in this book. Dr. Kronmiller holds an earned PhD. in Physics from the University of Texas at Dallas where he was a Robert Welch Fellow in Chemistry. He earned a B.S. in Natural Sciences, in the major areas of astronomy, math, physics and chemistry, from the University of Cincinnati. He is the inventor on multiple patents and author of peer review publications in electronics, physics, and chemistry. He is a member of the American Physical Society, Sigma Pi Sigma - National Physics Honor Society, American Chemical Society and the IEEE. In his early twenties, he worked for P&G and developed Downey fabric softener and optical brighteners for Tide. In his thirties, Dr. Kronmiller served as part of a medical missionary team in the Amazon Jungle of Brazil. Most recently using a method of laser chemistry, Dr. Kronmiller developed an asymmetric separation membrane used for water purification for long duration space flight. He has been teaching for over 40 years.

Description

China is in the midst of the fastest and most intense process of urbanisation the world has ever known, and Shanghai - its biggest, richest and most cosmopolitan city - is positioned for acceleration into the twenty-first century. Yet, in its embrace of a hopeful - even exultant - futurism, Shanghai recalls the older and much criticised project of imagining, planning and building the modern metropolis. Today, among Westerners, at least, the very idea of the futuristic city - with its multilayered skyways, domestic robots and flying cars - seems doomed to the realm of nostalgia, the sadly comic promise of a future that failed to materialise. Shanghai Future maps the city of tomorrow as it resurfaces in a new time and place. It searches for the contours of an unknown and unfamiliar futurism in the city's street markets as well as in its skyscrapers. For though it recalls the modernity of an earlier age, Shanghai's current re-emergence is only superficially based on mimicry. Rather, in seeking to fulfill its ambitions, the giant metropolis is reinventing the very idea of the future itself. As it modernises, Shanghai is necessarily recreating what it is to be modern.

Description

When researchers in computer-mediated communications discuss digital textuality, they rarely venture beyond the now commonplace notion that computer textuality embodies contemporary post-structuralist theories. Written for students and faculty of contemporary literature and composition theories, this book is the first to move from general to specific considerations. Advancing from general considerations of how computers are changing literacy, Digital Fictions moves on to a specific consideration of how computers are altering one particular set of literature practices: reading and writing fiction. Suffused through the sensibility of a creative writer, this book includes an historical overview of writing stories on computers. In addition, Sloane conducts interviews with the makers of hypertext fictions (including Stuart Moulthrop, Michael Joyce, and Carolyn Guyer) and offers close reading of digital fictions. Making careful analyses of the meaning-making activities of both readers and writers of this emerging genre, this work is embedded in a perspective both feminist and semiotic. Digital Fictions explores and distinguishes among four distinct iterations of text-based digital fictions; text adventures, Carnegie Mellon University Oz Project, hypertext fictions, and MUDs. Ultimately, Sloane revises the rhetorical triangle and proposes a new rhetorical theory, one that attends to the materials, processes, and locations of stories told on-line.

Description

In the last thirty years, there have been fierce debates over how civilizations develop and why the West became so powerful. The Measure of Civilization presents a brand-new way of investigating these questions and provides new tools for assessing the long-term growth of societies. Using a groundbreaking numerical index of social development that compares societies in different times and places, award-winning author Ian Morris sets forth a sweeping examination of Eastern and Western development across 15,000 years since the end of the last ice age. He offers surprising conclusions about when and why the West came to dominate the world and fresh perspectives for thinking about the twenty-first century. Adapting the United Nations' approach for measuring human development, Morris's index breaks social development into four traits--energy capture per capita, organization, information technology, and war-making capacity--and he uses archaeological, historical, and current government data to quantify patterns. Morris reveals that for 90 percent of the time since the last ice age, the world's most advanced region has been at the western end of Eurasia, but contrary to what many historians once believed, there were roughly 1,200 years--from about 550 to 1750 CE--when an East Asian region was more advanced. Only in the late eighteenth century CE, when northwest Europeans tapped into the energy trapped in fossil fuels, did the West leap ahead. Resolving some of the biggest debates in global history, The Measure of Civilization puts forth innovative tools for determining past, present, and future economic and social trends.

Description

History, Humanity and Evolution brings together thirteen original essays by prominent scholars in the history of evolutionary thought. The volume is intended both to represent the best of today's research in the field and also to celebrate the work of the distinguished historian, John C. Greene, whose historical writings have had a unique influence on this volume's contributors as well as the field as a whole. Using contemporary sources as diverse as medicine, literature, and natural history tableaux, and drawing on the resources of publishing history, feminist scholarship, and the histories of politics, sociology, and philosophy, the contributors offer new perspectives not only on familiar figures such as Erasmus and Charles Darwin, Lamarck, Chambers, Huxley, and Haeckel, but also on many lesser known participants in the evolutionary debates. The volume contains a fascinating introductory conversation with John C. Greene and an afterword by him that responds to the contributors' essays.
